How To Select The RIGHT Drill Bushing - Page 3

BUSHING KINDS AND WHEN TO USE THEM - CONTINUED

KNURLED BUSHINGS

Two patterns - straight splined, and grooved diamond knurled - are made for imbedment in jigs made of laminated glass fibers, potting compounds, castable and soft materials, etc. While all patterns have exceptional self-locking grip and holding power, straight splined bushings may be desirable where the bushing O.D. is used for locating another jig, fixture, or work tool. The splined bushing is also more easily pressed into a plastic-type jig (see Installation Suggestions, Page1). Grooved diamond knurled bushings are superior in holding strength, the grooves acting as internal shoulders.

OIL GROOVE BUSHINGS

Oil groove bushings provide positive, complete drill lubrication, and are ideal for applications that require cooler running drills, such as drilling hardened steel. Lubricant (or coolant) works through the bushing via grooves in the I.D. Wall. Many groove styles are available, as are wiper designs that guard against dirt or chips. These bushings are ideally suited as lubrication, probe bar, die casing, die set and hydraulic press bushings.

SPECIAL BUSHINGS

We give special attention to special bushings - bushings with special diameters, special shapes, special angles, special grooves, special materials, special threads, special set-screw holes, special mounting flanges, etc. Special bushings fall into two categories: a) a modified standard - where an ANSI or Economy Standard Length is modified in I.D., O.D., or length; and b) custom bushings made to solve a particular engineering or production problem. These bushings provide for all bushings not available as a standard or a modified standard bushing. These include special shapes, angles, materials, threads, etc. WHATEVER YOUR SPECIAL BUSHING REQUIREMENT, ECONOMY BUSHING CAN SUPPLY IT! Special Bushings

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

HARDNESS

High grade steels selected for Economy bushings are unusually wear resistant. A Rockwell C hardness of 58-62 is maintained in the bore. Rockwell C hardness of tungsten carbide is 78-80.

GRINDING STOCK

The outside diameter of press fit and liner bushings is finish- ground to the press fit size indicated in this catalog. Oversize (.015") O.D. bushings are available for fitting so that your shop can maintain its standard press fit limits. Bushings available with oversize grinding stock are "PU," "HU," "LU," and "HLU" types.

OTHER TOLERANCES

All tolerances not specified for head diameters are +/- .015 and for lengths +/- .010. Special tolerances for any dimension are available upon request as a special bushing.

BORE TOLERANCE

Standard bushings have the following oversize tolerance:

BORE TOLERANCE

DRILL SIZE I.D. TOLERANCE (OVERSIZE)
.0135 - .2500 +.0001 to +.0004
.2510 - .7500 +.0001 to +.0005
.7510 - 1.500 +.0002 to +.0006
1.5010 - Up +.0003 to +.0007

REAMER TOLERANCE

REAMER SIZE I.D. TOLERANCE OVER BASIC SIZE
Up to 1/4" +.0005 to +.0008
1/4" to 1" +.0006 to +.0010
Over 1" +.0008 to +.0012

CONCENTRICITY

All finish-ground bushings with 1/8" to 1/2" I.D. are manufactured to .0003 T.I.R. at exit end. All other I.D. sizes are .0005 T.I.R. at exit end.
