The slip lock is used where more than one
operation is performed at the same hole, such as drilling and reaming. If it is necessary
to drill and then ream without disturbing the workpiece, two I.D. sizes of bushings are
needed. A drill bushing and a reamer bushing may be interchanged in the same liner without
affecting centering accuracy. For example, suppose you wish to produce a hole in a part
which has a tolerance that cannot be achieved by just drilling. The hole first must be
drilled and then reamed. In order to develop this hole the first operation would be to
drill a hole allowing ample stock for reaming, using a slip renewable bushing as your
guide. You would then remove this bushing and insert another slip renewable reamer bushing
with the I.D. size of your reamer. Both bushings fit perfectly into the same liner in the
fixture. The bushings are held in place by a lock screw fitted into a milled recess in the
head of the bushing. Reamer bushings are priced as specials.
HEADLESS
LINERS.
(ANSI designation L) When
either fixed or slip renewable bushings are used, hardened liners are pressed permanently
into the jig plate. They create a precise location point for the
replacement of slip or fixed renewable bushings. |
 |
They also protect the hole in the jig plate from wear caused
by frequent bushing replacement. These bushings are furnished finish-ground on the O.D.
(Type L), or with grinding stock on the O.D. (Type LU) for customer fitting to his
required size. Headless liners are used where almost no impact will occur on the head of
the bushing.
 |
HEAD LINERS.
(ANSI designation HL) These liners are identical to headless liners, except that they have
a head or shoulder. These liners are preferred whenever excessive pounding will occur
during operation; the head preventing the liner from being pushed through the jig plate. |
In preparing a jig plate to receive a head liner, the jig plate is
counterbored to bring the top of the bushing flush with the jig plate. This liner also is
supplied finish-ground (Type HL) or with grinding stock (Type HLU).
BUSHING KINDS AND WHEN TO USE THEM
We have discussed various types of
bushings. These types are available in many different kinds of bushing
configurations. Those made by Economy Bushing Company are:
ANSI STANDARD BUSHINGS
These are the most commonly used bushings and conform
to ANSI specifications. Generally, these are the most economical bushings. Refer to Page 3
for information on ANSI part numbers.
ANSI EQUIVALENT BUSHINGS
ANSI Equivalent bushings are identical to ANSI
Standard bushings in every dimension except length. The ANSI Equivalent is the
"in-between" size as far as length is concerned. In other words, it is a length
in between each ANSI standard length. These bushings are priced as standards. Additional
cost savings may be made by using a thinner jig plate. For example, because a 5/8"
ECONOMY STANDARD LENGTH BUSHING is available, it is not necessary to go to the 3/4"
ASA standard if only a 5/8" bushing is necessary.
EXTENDED RANGE BUSHINGS
In 1956, Economy Bushing Company originated the
extended range bushing. Extended range bushings have larger O.D. ranges and lengths not
covered by ANSI standards. These bushings are available in headless press fit, head press
fit, and renewable types. Extended range liners are also available.
X-TRA THINWALL BUSHINGS
Designed specifically for use in applications where
extremely close hole patterns must be drilled with great accuracy. Space is saved by
reducing wall thickness and head diameter. Bushing ruggedness and service life are not
impaired. These bushings are available in ANSI standard drill sizes. Other sizes are
available on request.
TUNGSTEN CARBIDE BUSHINGS
Tungsten carbide bushings last up to 50 times longer
than ordinary hardened steel bushings because of their Rockwell C hardness of 78-80,
compared to standard bushing hardness of 58-62. The additional cost of these extremely
hard, precision bushings is offset by their longer life and assurance of high accuracy
over long production runs. These bushings also are available in ANSI standard drill
bushing sizes.
